Harvard referencing generator is a style of citation. Using it you can make quotes from any source. It is easy to use. It is a complete reference list in which you will get all the sources that are used when making a particular piece of work or writing. This information includes various information like name of author, date of publication, title of the source etc.

While adding the reference list in your work you must keep in mind that

  • Take a new sheet and enlist the information there.
  • If there is more than one author, then arrange the names of the authors in alphabetical series. if there is no author, then put the source title at the first position and avoid using articles i.e. a, an, the there.
  • Sometimes we find that there are more works done by an author, then arrange the works according to the date of publication. If you find all the works are published in the same year, then arrange the works alphabetically based on the title.
  • After every line give a full space between the texts.

How to use Harvard referencing in-text:

Before going to any step we need to know what in-text referencing is actually. In simple words it is a type of reference that are used in the body of the work and it refers to a quote or paraphrase. It is shorter in length than full reference.

  • The full reference in-text citation includes author’s surname or the editor’s surname, date and year of publication, page number etc.

For example: Kipling (1997, p. 206) describes that……

Or, (Kipling, 1997, p. 206)

You can use any of the types in your work.

Note: in case of a single page use only ‘p’, while you need more than one page, then ‘pp’ is used.

  • Sometimes you may feel the need of adding the names of two or three authors, in such cases you can follow the below mentioned example:

Kipling, Dickens and Milton (1999, p. 206) describes that….

Or, (Kipling, Dickens and Milton, 1999, p. 206)

  • If you need to add the names of four or more authors, then you need to write the surname of the first author and left are followed by ‘et al’.

For example: Kipling et al (1999, p. 206) describes that….

Or, Kipling et al, 1999, p. 206)

  • When you find there is no sign of the author, then you may add the name of the organization that is responsible for the work. If it is also not available then just put the title of the work in italics.

For example: (A passage to citation, 1999, pp. 206-212)

  • When you find there are multiple works that are published by an author in the same year then you need to allocate a particular letter after the year. This must be arranged alphabetically based on the author’s surname and the title of the work.

For example: Kipling, 1999q, p. 206

Or, (Kipling, 1999q, p. 206)

  • When there is no existence of date, then you need to follow the below mentioned format:

(Kipling, no date, p. 206)

How can an edited book be cited using Harvard referencing style?

Before knowing the format, we need to know what an edited book actually is because there are many students for whom an edited book is not common. An edited book is a collaboration of various chapters that is accumulated from different writer’s work. The reference style used in those books are similar, as a result taking chapters from them becomes easier. But the only difference in all of them is the name of the authors. Here the editor’s name is used so that it clearly indicates that it is the editor, not the author. The format is written below.

Surname of the editor or editors, Initial. (eds.) (year of publication). Title of the work. Edition. Place of Publishing: name of publishers

Note: here ‘eds.’ Indicates the name of editors.

For example: Bolt, C.G. (eds.) (1999) Taking a note on citation. Switzerland: Royal Publisher

By using this Harvard referencing style you can cite an edited book, a particular chapter in an edited book, E-book, a newspaper, website, TV program,  music, an article, online journal, non-print material and even by using it you can cite a film too.

Seeing the usage it is clear that Harvard referencing style is a unique and useful tool for citations. As a result its usage is expanded in the wild range.
