Every sentence is made up of phrases and clauses. But sometimes we feel perplexed as we fail to differentiate between a phrase and a clause.

A phrase and a clause both contain a group of words or more than that which help us to build the sentences. But we can’t say that both are the same, both have a different role in the sentences. But to identify them at first we need to know their definition.

What is a Phrase?

A phrase is a group of words but here you will not get any subject or verb.

What is a Clause?

A clause is a group of words where you will find only a subject and a verb.

We can use a clause as a single sentence, but we can’t use a phrase as an individual sentence. Phrases are used in a sentence to make it meaningful but it doesn’t have the ability to form a single sentence of their own.

On the other hand, clauses are the necessary part of a sentence. If you want to separate a clause from the sentence, then it may affect the understanding of the sentence.

Below, our best assignment experts Australia have tried to explain it with the help of an example.

  • Whatever you do, I will do the same.
  • If you don’t do this, you will feel troubled.

In the first sentence ‘whatever you do’ is the phrase and ‘I will do the same.’ is the clause.

If you check the sentence properly, you will find that ‘whatever you do’ doesn’t have any sense of its own as it is not a complete sentence. But ‘I will support you’ contains both the subject and a verb. As a result, it gives a complete sense and we don’t need to take the help of more words to understand its meaning.

In the second sentence, ‘if you don’t do this is the phrase, and ‘you will feel troubled’ is the clause. Here, ‘if you don’t do this does not have any sense or meaning of its own, as it is not a complete sentence. But ‘you will feel troubled’ contains both subject and verb. It is a complete sentence and it doesn’t need an extra word to understand the meaning of the sentence.

There are many students who feel puzzled regarding the difference between phrase, clause, and sentence. Sometimes they fail to differentiate them. Their joined form helps to make a sentence, as a result, sometimes identifying them individually becomes a difficult task.

You can consider a sentence as a building that is made up of various blocks; as a sentence is made up of phrases and clauses. There are three types of sentences such as simple, complex, and compound. Each sentence starts with a capital letter and ends with a full stop, exclamation mark, or question mark.

How Can You Identify a Phrase and a Clause?

The simplest way to find out a phrase and a clause is to look for the subject and the verb. If you find both are present in the part of a sentence, then it is a clause. On the other hand, if you find only find either subject or verb, then it is a phrase.

How Many Types of Phrases and Clauses are There?

Types of Phrase

Generally, the phrase gives detailed information about the sentence and makes the sentence more interesting. By seeing the phrase we come to know about the locations, actions, etc in detail. There are basically seven types of phrases used in a sentence, such as

  • Noun Phrase

Example: The pink house belongs to Mrs. Bond. – Here ‘pink house’ indicates a noun phrase.

  • Gerund Phrase

Example: walking at night along the dark road isn’t safe. Here ‘walking at night’ is the gerund phrase.

  • Verb Phrase

Example, Johnny was writing all day long. – Here ‘was writing’ is the verb phrase.

  • Infinitive Phrase

Types of Clause

On the other hand, clauses are considered to be the main part of a sentence. Without a clause, we can’t make a sentence and without it a sentence would look like a group of words that does not have any meaning of its own. As a result, it would be called a phrase.

On the other hand, there is some clause that can’t stand alone. In that case, finding it becomes a hazardous task for the students.

Example: John does not take rest until he feels exhausted. – Here ‘until he feels exhausted’ is the adverbial clause.

What are the Basic Differences between a Phrase and a Clause?

  • A phrase is considered to be a group of words that does not contain any verb or subject and stands as a conceptual unit; where a grammatical arrangement of words having a subject and a verb to make the sentence meaningful is called a clause.
  • A clause is a part of a complete sentence, whereas a phrase is a part of a clause.
  • A phrase is a mixture of words, where each word carries meaning individually and the whole does not give any complete sense. Whereas a clause gives a complete meaning to a sentence.
  • The clause can stand alone but the phrase can’t stand alone.
  • A phrase does not have a subject and predicate that form the basic structure of a sentence. But a clause has both the subject and the predicate that give it a complete sense and meaning.
